ABA Schoolboy Championships - Hampshire & IOW Championship Round
First up was Bailey Fowler (class 1, 38kg, City Boys School) taking on Billy Cable (Ted Harris Boxing Academy) in the semi final round. The bout was very cagey for the first 30 seconds, Fowler then found his rhythm and took charge. Each round Fowler stepped up the gears, putting together fast and accurate 4 punch combinations. Billy Cable showed a lot of heart and kept coming, but was unable to match Fowlers pace. Fowler taking a unanimous points win.
Joe Hunt (Class 1, 34kg, Admiral Lord Nelson School) met head to head with Joe Butler (Waterlooville). Butler came flying out with his aggressive southpaw style. Hunt weathered the storm, then used his his Jab to halt Butlers Charges. Second round Hunt took centre of the ring and dictated the pace for most of the round. Butler was strong and showed good head moving and evaded most shots and occasionally landing with heavy hands. Third round was met at a high pace. Hunt coming out on top with superior boxing skills using his height and reach advantage.
Jack Fenton (Class 1, under 42kg, St Edmunds) took on the much fancied Tommy Owen (Tadley and District). Fenton shocked Owen right from the opening bell, sticking on Owen and not allowing him room to move. Fenton used his stiff jab to head and body to back Owen up, then sending his powerful right hand at different angles. Owen came out quick in the second round, with a very even exchange in the round. Third round Fenton started with a huge effort, throwing lots of punches and keeping Owen under tremendous pressure. Fenton could not keep up this pace for the whole round, with Owen trying to find a way back. Fenton dug deep to come out on top by majority decision.
The much awaited bout between Jack Featherstone (under 46kg, Cams Hill School) and former HOP boxer Callum Rodden was now approaching. The atmosphere in the Golden Ring venue was very intense, with the noise level at an incredible high. The bout did not disappoint, matching the intensity of the crowd. Clean exchanges with Featherstone coming out on top with better accuracy and strength. The second round much the same. Rodden was not budging an inch, Featherstone also refusing to give. Mid-way throught second Featherstone upped a gear throwing three and four punch combination in quick succession, all with full power. Rodden showed great stamina and determination taking the fight to Featherstone in the last round. Rodden on the front foot gave a great charge in the last, Featherstone using all his conditioning and ring-craft to slow the tide, coming out on top as the eventual winner by unanimous decision.
Heart Of Portsmouth's Lewis Morgan (Class 2, under 57kg, City Boys) in only his first season boxing came up against a more experienced opponent in Ashley Davenport (Ted Harris Boxing Academy). The opening exchange showed both opponents were very strong and powerful, with an evenly matched first round. Davenport then increased the workrate with Morgan evading and countering. Davenport showed good conditioning and stamina to increase the intensity again to run out with a unanimous win. Morgan showing to be a very tough opponent and will be coming on strong next year.
Bailey Fowler then boxing on the last bout of the day, against Harry Maggs (Fareham) who was the fresher of the two, having had a bye to the final. Fowler stole the show with an outstanding performance, Maggs taking two standing 8 counts during the contest. Fowler improved as the bout went on, showing he is definitely one to watch and in only his first season boxing. Fowler putting together stunning combination, landing a beatiful rear hand uppercut at the final bell. Fowler wins by unanimous decision.
With 6 boxers through and all eager to take on Surrey next Sunday, Paul Kapnisi said "they all put the work in the gym over christmas and it has paid off, I am very proud of all the performances."
